About Mintex

Mintex is the brake friction specialist with a properly old British history β€” founded in 1908 in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, originally as a manufacturer of friction materials for industrial and motorsport applications. The brand is now part of TMD Friction (which also owns Textar and Don) and is OE supplier to multiple manufacturers, with particular strength in performance and motorsport brake compounds.

Why brake-specialist friction matters

Brake pads aren't just a block of friction material β€” they're a tuned compound designed to grip at a specific temperature range, with specific noise characteristics, dust output and wear behaviour. The OE pad on a small petrol hatchback is a different formulation from the pad on a tuned diesel estate; that's why "wrong" pads can squeal, fade, dust excessively or wear unevenly.

Mintex's catalogue is built around getting the formulation right for each vehicle's typical use case. The standard road range (M1144 and similar) is engineered for everyday driving β€” quiet, low-dust, predictable bite. The motorsport range (RM, F1A, F4R compounds) is for trackday and racing use, with higher operating temperature ceilings and higher friction coefficients at heat.

When to choose Mintex

For any car where braking performance matters β€” performance hatch, estate that tows, anything used hard. Mintex's road compounds tend to outperform generic aftermarket pads on both initial bite and resistance to fade after repeated stops. For motorsport or trackday cars, the Mintex motorsport range is one of the standard UK choices.

For a daily-driven city hatchback that does mostly slow traffic β€” Mintex is overspecified but not wrong. A cheaper brand will do the same job for that use case.
