About Bosch
Robert Bosch GmbH is the world's largest automotive supplier — over €40bn a year in automotive revenue, supplying OE parts to nearly every passenger-car manufacturer on Earth. The company was founded in Stuttgart in 1886 by Robert Bosch as a "Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering" and the name has been on automotive parts continuously since the first magneto in 1897.
What they actually make for cars
The Bosch automotive range is enormous, but the core competencies break into three buckets. Fuel and ignition: spark plugs, glow plugs, lambda sensors, fuel pumps, fuel injectors, ignition coils, diesel injection systems (CRI, CRIN), turbochargers. Bosch's common-rail diesel technology is the OE system on most European TDI/HDi/CDTi engines from the early 2000s onwards. Electrical and electronics: alternators, starter motors, glow controllers, engine ECUs, ABS modules, airbag controllers. Wear and service: wiper blades (Aerotwin retrofit kits in particular), brake pads and discs (with the Bosch QuietCast and Eurocode ranges).
One thing worth knowing: the part you buy "off the shelf" from Bosch is often identical to the part the OE manufacturer specified — same factory, same materials, just without the carmaker's logo. A Bosch oxygen sensor sold over the counter is the same physical part the dealer sells at 2-3× the price.
When to choose Bosch
For ignition components (spark plugs, ignition coils, glow plugs) on European cars — Bosch is almost always the right choice; many of these are the OE part. For diesel injection (injectors, high-pressure pumps, common-rail components) — Bosch is the manufacturer of the original system in most cases, and rebuilt Bosch injectors are the standard. For wiper blades, the Aerotwin range fits a huge range of vehicles cleanly and outlasts most competitors.
For brakes, there are specialist brands (Brembo, Textar, Mintex) that focus exclusively on friction — they're worth considering for performance applications, but standard Bosch brake parts are perfectly fine for everyday driving.
