About Apec Blue
The Blue range is Apec's mid-premium tier β sitting between the standard Black range (everyday service) and the Red range (premium and performance). Apec is a UK brake specialist founded in 1972 in Coventry, focused solely on braking systems.
What's different about the Blue range
The Blue range uses higher-grip pad compounds and drilled-and-grooved discs as standard on most fitments. The drilled holes and machined grooves on the disc surface serve two purposes: they help dissipate gases that build up between pad and disc under heavy braking (which is what causes brake fade), and they sweep water away from the friction surface in wet conditions. The combination of higher-grip compound and better gas evacuation gives the Blue range stronger initial bite and better resistance to fade than the standard Black range.
The trade-off, as with any performance-oriented brake setup, is in dust output and noise: drilled-grooved discs can be slightly noisier and produce more visible dust. For owners who care about brake feel and performance under harder use, the trade-off is worth it.
When to choose Apec Blue
For performance hatchbacks (GTI, ST, Type R, RS), hot saloons, fast estates, vehicles used hard on country roads, or owners who want a noticeably better brake feel than standard β Apec Blue is a strong UK choice at a meaningfully lower price than premium specialist brands.
For a normal daily driver doing motorway commuting and city traffic, Blue is overspecified β Apec Black does the job. For full-on track use or supercar-spec performance, the Red range or a brake specialist (Brembo, Mintex motorsport) may be appropriate.
